Stanford U to Actualize Indian Student's Idea of Using Human Pulse to Charge Cell Phones Think out of the box. It pays. This is what 15-year-old Sarojini
Mahajan is happy to realise after her idea of using human pulse to
charge a cellphone was picked up by Stanford University on Wednesday. A
class IX student of St Mark's Senior Secondary Public School, Meera
Bagh, Sarojini had sent her idea as an entry to IGNITE 2009 — a
nationwide contest of innovative ideas. Though she won a consolation
prize in the contest , Stanford University will now work on her idea.
According to Professor Anil Gupta, vice-chairperson , National
Innovation Foundation (NIF), which conducts IGNITE every year, Stanford
University has already given a token amount of $1,000 to develop a
prototype if feasible. '' The girl has provided the idea. But we need
technical assistance to make it work. Stanford University has come
forward to try out if human pulse can be used to charge an e-book they
have developed.'' |

India to Build Next Generation of Airplanes for Airbus and Boeing
Indian aviation expertise is now no longer confined to the cockpit
and the crew. Domestic talent is now being tapped for the design and
system integration of aircraft as well. Aerospace majors such as Airbus
and Boeing have formed partnerships with the IISc, IITs and
IIM-Bangalore to develop their next-generation air-birds, including
A380s, A350s and the 787 Dreamliner.
Chief executive officer of Airbus Engineering Centre India (AECI)
Eugen Welte told ET that their company had decided to set up operations
in India to source talent and develop competency here. "Of the 130
people recruited here, 120 are engineers and the company will increase
the number to 400 by 2012," he said. |

India Has About $50 Billion of Power-Generation Projects for Private Sector
State-owned power generation companies NTPC and Damodar Valley
Corporation (DVC) are likely to float on Friday global tenders worth
over Rs 250 billion for sourcing supercritical power equipment for five
power plants, a power ministry official told ET.
The proposal, which has already been approved by the Cabinet
Committee on Infrastructure, requires the successful bidders to also
gradually shift production to India, setting in motion the government's
initiative to encourage domestic manufacturing of the energy efficient
power equipment. The equipment would kick-start five power projects
across Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Jharkhand, setting in
motion investment of about Rs 400 billion. |

PM Singh to Firms: Grow Your Revenues, then Go Public to Unlock Value and Expand
Keen on unlocking value of public sector enterprises (PSEs), Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh today said the government was encouraging them
to raise resources by listing on the stock exchanges.
"The government is encouraging the listing of PSEs, as this unlocks
the true value of a company, improves its corporate governance
standards and also helps it in raising resources for funding future
expansion plans," he said at an award function for the PSEs here. |
Indian Institutes of Management to Offer Some Seats to Foreign Students Soon
LUCKNOW, October 27, 2009 - With a view to giving a global stature to the country’s prestigious
B-schools, Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) plan to throw open
their gates for foreign students. The directors of various IIMs have already discussed the matter
informally and it could be taken up at the higher level for a final
decision, sources in IIM-Lucknow said here today.
As of now, only Indian students can apply for admission to the IIMs.
“We are looking into the matter. If it is passed, it may come into
effect from next session,” Devi Singh, director, IIM-Lucknow, said.
However, if the plan takes shape, it would not cut into the seats of
the Indian students, as the number of seats could be increased by 10
per cent to accommodate foreign students, who could have to take a
GMAT-type exam for seats in the premier institutes, sources have recently said. IIMs are also contemplating opening campuses outside the country,
and this matter would also be taken up in advanced discussions, sources
