This is a comprehensive and authoritative book on musculoskeletal disorders, physical injuries and their diagnosis and treatment, from pain relief to surgery, physiotherapy and rehabilitation, and anything in between. Its coverage is extensive, and this brief outline of the book’s contents gives you an overview of what you will find in it:

Musculoskeletal Disorders (nine sections with 94 chapters)

  • Head, Neck and Upper Back
  • Shoulder
  • Elbow and Forearm
  • Hand and Wrist
  • Mid Back
  • Low Back
  • Pelvis, Hip and Thigh
  • Knee and Leg
  • Foot and Ankle

Pain (23 chapters)

Rehabilitation (45 chapters)

This large book represents the work of three editors and contributions from 227 doctors, experts, and surgeons not only in physical and rehabilitative medicine, but also in anesthesiology, cardiology, internal medicine, neurology, nephrology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pain medicine, physiatry, podiatry, pulmonology, radiology, rheumatology, robotic medicine, speech-language pathology, and sports medicine.

The contributing authors of the book’s 162 chapters hail mainly from all over the United States, but also from Brazil, Canada, Puerto Rico, Singapore, and South Korea.

Amply illustrated with numerous full-color, detailed drawings, as well as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) scans, the book provides you the opportunity to understand the problems thoroughly, make accurate diagnoses, and develop effective treatment plans.

Each chapter begins with the following: Synonyms related to the subject matter covered as shown in the chapter title; ICD- 9 Codes and ICD-10 Codes. A Definition of the condition mentioned in the chapter title is then given, followed by detailed description of the Symptoms, Physical Examination, Functional Limitations, Diagnostic Studies, and Treatment. These are all headings of paragraphs, so it is easy to reference the first time and later.

In the Treatment section, the detailed steps to the following courses of action are covered as subsections: Initial, Rehabilitation, Procedures, and Surgery. Under Surgery, different approaches are discussed.  Towards the end of each chapter the authors present Potential Disease Complications and Potential Treatment Complications. A list of sources for further study is provided in the References section at the end of each chapter.

Systematic organization of the materials presented is one of the valuable hallmarks of this excellent book by Drs. Frontera, Silver and Rizzo, who have done an outstanding job.
