This handy book provides a broad overview and discussions of various methodologies used today to treat patients with different cancers. The treatments are medical and / or pharmacological, as well as radiation therapy and / or surgery, or combinations of these.

Many different factors determine the course of treatments. Some of the factors depend on the type of cancer, others depend on the severity of the disease, and still others factors depend on the condition of the patient in relation to the disease.

Many of the chapter authors follow this type of outline as they present the outline of the topics and materials, as shown below from chapter 2 – Essentials of Surgical Oncology:

  • Introduction
  • Historical Perspective
  • Modern Surgical Oncology
  • Presentation, Diagnosis, and Staging
  • Multimodality Therapy
  • References

But other chapters’ outlines of topics are different, such as chapter 7, Cancer of the Pancreas:

  • Epidemiology
  • Genetics
  • Pathology
  • Diagnosis
  • Staging
  • Treatment
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Locoregional Therapy
  • Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors
  • Symptoms
  • Pathology
  • Genetics
  • Staging
  • Tumor
  • Lymph Nodes
  • Metastases
  • Staging
  • Treatment
  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy
  • Prognosis

Major features found in this book:

  • An overview of clinical trials provides a glimpse of future IO innovations
  • A road map to a successful interventional oncology (IO) career includes pearls gleaned from years of managing a thriving practice
  • IO interventions for prevalent cancers such as bladder, breast, colorectal, gynecologic, liver, lung, pancreatic, and prostate cancers, as well as less common pathologies including neuro-endocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and cholangiocarcinoma.
  • More than 100 illustrations accompany succinct discussions of epidemiology, genetics, IO options for each type of tumor, , outcomes, pathology, staging, and treatment

This is a compact handbook for oncologists with an overview of the basic information needed, particularly on the different types of interventions or treatment modalities available. It is assumed that the practitioner either has necessary skills for each type of intervention or treatment, or if he does not, will endeavor to acquire the required skills

For detailed information, particularly on difficult cancer cases, full-fledged textbooks should be consulted or the assistance of more experienced colleagues should be sought.
