This is a very good book on diagnosing injuries and abnormalities in the anatomy and physiology of the hand and particularly the wrist, as well as repairing or replacing the parts thereof. Different types of scopes are used to look at the structures of the wrist, and various instruments are utilized to perform surgeries. These tools are presented in the first of 27 chapters of this volume.

A big plus of this book is the ample number of clear, full-color images of the myriad structures and operative techniques employed in “fixing” the wrist and hand: almost 500 of them. The charts, anatomical drawings and sketches of the wrist, hand, and arm are all very clear and distinct. And the actual photos of the injuries and the “repair work” are excellent learning tools for you.

With arthroscopy (discovery and analysis) of the wrist, and arthroplasty (surgery) of the wrist being the main focus of this work, the medical and / or surgical resident and student will find this work to be an indispensable tool on training for this practice specialty. And of course the seasoned hand and wrist surgeon as well as the general orthopedic and plastic surgeon will find this educational.

The coverage of subject matter in this unique book is extensive, as shown below on its Contents page:

  1. Materials and Set Up
  2. Surgical Approaches
  3. Arthroscopic Anatomy of the Wrist
  4. Arthroscopic Treatment of Dorsal Wrist Ganglia
  5. Arthroscopic Excision of Volar Wrist Ganglia

Among the many benefits of using this book are the following:

  • Meticulous explanation of anatomical structures
  • Multiple surgical approaches included, where applicable
  • Coverage of new minimally invasive arthroscopy
  • Use of pyrocarbon implants, and bone and tendon grafts for reconstruction
  • Analysis of postoperative range-of-motion, stability and overall outcome

All chapters provide the following sections, and most have good coverage of topics relating to their particular subject. You’ll typically find in the chapters:

  • Introduction
  • General Principles
  • Surgical Approaches
  • Operative Technique
  • Patient Preparation
  • Closure and Postoperative Care
  • Conclusion
