Book Review by Nano Khilnani

This is the fourth edition of this book (the first one was published in 1992) and it contains the most recent advancements in this field. Among other developments, it offers recent microvascular techniques, some new minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, and a number of unique applied technologies.

This book is the premier text, and likely the most comprehensive one available today on the science and art of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. The contents of this edition include, among other new offerings, the following:

  • Addressing demands for higher-quality, lower cost, quicker recovery
  • Ambulatory surgical concerns
  • Anti-aging strategies
  • Evidence-based decision making
  • Practical issues in facial plastic surgery for ethnic variations

The 73 chapters that comprise this tome of over a thousand pages were authored by 136 specialists around the world. While most of the writers are from the United States, a few are from four other countries, namely Canada, Germany, Singapore, and South Korea.

Earlier chapters establish a foundation for this surgical specialty, covering subjects such as aesthetic facial analysis, anatomy, computer imaging, and wound healing. Later ones look at evidence-based medicine with respect to facial reshaping, implants, and tissue engineering.

As likely expected by you, you will find chapters on several means of facial rejuvenation such as ablative and non-ablative treatments with lasers, peels, dermabrasion, facial fillers, and other topics.

Other chapters demonstrate and describe the steps to soft tissue scar revision, bone reconstruction, and ear, eyelid, and lip reconstruction. Nose enhancement options cover a significant part of this book with 16 chapters.

A random check of the titles of the 73 chapters in this book shows you these: Auricular Reconstruction, Complementary Fat Grafting, Cosmetic Surgery of the Asian Face, Diagnosis and Treatment of Cutaneous Malignancies, Endoscopic Forehead and Midface Lift, Hair Restoration, Liposuction of the Face and Neck, Otoplasty, Management of the Bony Nasal Vault, Mandibular Reconstruction and Osseointegrated Dental Implants, and Rhytidectomy.

Of special note about this book, which gives it enormous value, is the wide and frequent use

of a variety of graphics. Indeed, more than two thousand images are used to show the how-to of various tasks, the steps-to a particular outcome, and the before-and-after effects.

Colorful charts, detailed fine-line drawings, microscopic views of membranes, superior sketches, tabular presentations of data, and other visual means are employed in this book to make the material easier to understand and remember.

The entire printed contents of this book, and much, more more, can be viewed online. Go to www.MediaCenter.Thieme.com and register your copy of this book by inputting the access code found on the first page. Your purchase also includes the ability to view 54 videos. The titles of these videos are listed on page ix.

Some of the top features of this book are:

  • Online access to more than 35 videos demonstrating the latest procedures and techniques
  • New chapters on African rhinoplasty, facial paralysis treatment, evidence-based facial plastic surgery, tissue engineering, costal rib utilization techniques, and face transplants.
  • Clinical insights from luminaries in the field of facial plastic and reconstructive surgery
  • More than 2,000 full-color images and illustrations demonstrating main concepts

One of the means to judge the success of a book is the number of editions it has. This being its fourth edition, plus the fact that it has been around since 1992, or the last 24 years, certainly proves that this book is in great demand, and is therefore a great success. We highly recommend that you obtain it.
